In August 1917 John K. Outman and his wife Mattie started a home for orphan children in Osceola, Pennsylvania. Their intention was to do this completely on their own, but they quickly discovered that the demands were too great. In 1919 they pulled together a group of men to help and a corporation was formed. John and Mattie continued to run the Bethel Orphanage until 1926. During this time, many articles were written in the area newspapers about them and the Bethel Orphanage. Thanks to the Green Free Public Library, several newpapers from Wellsboro, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, covering the period 1838 to 2003, are available online. Many articles about the Orphanage have been excerpted from these newspapers and can be accessed below. From what I can tell, this orphanage continued to exist through the 1950's.
